If you have received a letter from your local municipality insisting that you install or test your commercial backflow preventer you are not alone. The installation and testing of backflow preventer devices are now mandatory under the Safe Drinking Water Act, for all owners of industrial, commercial, institutional and multi-residential properties.
Trouble Shooters is an approved contractor for the testing, installation, and maintenance of commercial backflow preventers in Toronto and throughout the Province of Ontario.
UNDERSTANDING BACKFLOW
Installing a backflow preventer on your private water system is essential for preserving the normal flow of water and preventing contamination. This device ensures that water flows from the public supply into your private system only, effectively inhibiting the potential backflow of chemicals, pollutants, and other harmful substances into the public water supply.
Back-Pressure
Occurs when the pressure on the customer’s side of the water connection is greater than City’s water supply system, and the difference between greater and lower pressure propels water from the customer’s connection back into the main water supply system.
Back Siphonage
Occurs when there is a significant drop in pressure in the main water supply lines which can pull water back into the system from a nearby connection. If the water in the nearby system is contaminated, it contaminates the water supply of a large area. This abrupt drop in pressure can be caused by the removal of large amounts of water from the system such as a water main break or the use of hydrants to fight a fire.
WHAT TYPE OF BACKFLOW PREVENTION DEVICE DO YOU NEED?
Double Check Valve Assembly (DVCA)
Used in moderate-hazard facilities, this device has two check valves. The second valve offers backup prevention in case one of the valves doesn’t close tightly. These valves can fail without any warning and must be checked annually for optimal performance.
Reduced Pressure Principal Assembly(RP)
Used in severe-hazard facilities, this device has two independent internally-loaded valves that are separated by a reduced pressure zone. It should be tested at least once annually and installed in places with appropriate drainage.
